Marukawa Shoten works in Matsusaka cotton (Matsusaka momen), a striped, hand-woven cotton textile with a history stretching back to the Edo period. The studio turns this durable, breathable fabric into everyday textile goods, including the Azuma-bukuro tote bag, the Shijimi pouch, and the Nikki-ki journal cover – pieces that carry the fabric’s traditional striped patterning into modern, practical forms.
